Welcome to Yorkeys Knob Beach

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. In a total eclipse, the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In a partial and annular eclipses only part of the Sun is obscured.

Total solar eclipse are considered rare. Although, they occur on Earth every 18 months or so, they only reoccur in the same location every 400 years (give or take a half century).

Australia’s Cairns including Yorkeys Knob beach is the best spot in the world where you can experience the full benefit of Earth’s total solar eclipse on 14 November 2012. The eclipse will turn the sky into darkness for between 10 seconds and 2 minutes depending on where you are located. Yorkeys Knob should be closer to the 2 minutes.

It is not safe to look at the sun at anytime including an eclipse. The only way to view the eclipse without risking eye damage is to utilise safe solar filters that meet international standards.

Yorkeys Knob beach is a wide, sandy beach north of Cairns. Cairns Beachfront Apartment is located on the beachfront and would mean only a short 2 minute stroll to locate yourself in a great vantage point to observe the eclipse.

Check out the path of the eclipse here.

Platypus Ornithorhynchus anatinus

The platypus is restricted to the East Coast of Australia and Tasmania where it mainly inhabits fresh water rivers, streams, ponds and lakes. It is usually active around dusk and dawn, but may be nocturnal, diurnal or crepuscular.

The platypus feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates sifted from the substrate by the complex bill apparatus. Food obtained during a dive is stored in cheek pouches until it can be ground up by horny plates while the animal floats on the surface.

Breeding occurs in spring and the female constructs an elaborate nesting burrow which may be up to 20 metres long. Usually 2 eggs are laid and these are incubated for 1 to 2 weeks. The young feed on milk for the first 4 or 5 months before they leave the burrow.

The platypus is listed as a vulnerable species.

Join us on our Atherton Tablelands Wildlife Tour and you have a great chance of spotting a Platypus! We see them more often than not!

Lovely apartment, great beach and that pool, too gorgeous for words. - Tina and Rob (Camberwell)

All have been test driven by the two, who in no way have been bribed with a free dessert for their unbiased opinions.

  1. Burgers – the best in Yorkeys at the Beach Place down the end of Sims Esplanade. Mine host Mal Quin does them to a nicety.

  1. Lunch or dinner – try the Yorkeys Knob Marina Club. Great scenery, good tucker and a wide range of beer and wine. You don’t have to be a member but you must sign in as a visitor.

  1. Breakfast – Hollways Beach Café on the beachfront under the palms. Their Eggs Florentine are a real treat as is their standard scrambled eggs and bacon.

  1. Lunch – for marvellous Mexican try Montezuma’s in Sheridan Street Cairns. Authentic textures and flavours and a great selection of dishes. The best Nachos going. Friendly staff and excellent service.

  1. Good old fashioned pub food – try the Rattle ‘n’ Hum on the Esplanade Cairns. A varied menu and a great range of freshly cooked pizzas.

  1. Romantic dinner beneath the stars – try Lunaco at Trinity Beach. Very Italian and very good, it is a lovely restaurant in a lovely tropical setting.

  1. Another good pub – try the Ellis Beach Hotel on the highway north to Port Douglas. A great lunch spot with all the typical pub fare, nicely done at reasonable prices.

  1. Indian – Spicy Bite on the Esplanade Cairns. Once again very authentic with a varied menu. This food is fresh, succulent and tasty and the service is first rate. If you’re hankering for a curry, some Na’an or a  spicy samosa this is the spot.

  1. Breakfast, lunch, anytime – Eighty Café – at the roundabout Corner Woodward and Pease Streets Edge Hill. Great brekkies and lunches. Also a good spot to pop into for a quick coffee during the day.

  1. And finally, Chinese – A Taste of China – you must visit this fantastic restaurant in Abbott Street in the heat of the city. A great menu where the spices and flavours come together wonderfully well. The food is excellent as is the service. It’s a top spot and you ought to book there.

If you are planning a drive from Yorkeys Knob to Port Douglas (or further north) allow some time to take a left turn into Hartleys Crododile Advertures. It is the opportunity of a lifetime to get up, close and personal with alot of crocodiles - and some are quite imposing indeed.

Try feeding time - see them in their more active state. Take the river cruise and see Crocs leaping out of the water.

It is not only crocodiles either. Other wildlife include cassawaries, koalas, snakes, and other tropical birds.

Hartleys Crododile Adventures is a short drive from Cairns Beach Holiday Apartment www.cairnsbeachholidays.com.au. Or you can arrange to be collected from the apartment.

Cairns Beach Holiday Apartment is located opposite a beautiful beach with 2.5 bedrooms and all a luxury apartment could offer.

Enjoy!

Cairns Regional Gallery opened on July 15th 1995 in a beautifully refurbished heritage building in central Cairns.  The gallery has 4 separate exhibition spaces and actively promotes local artists work.  It also has many workshops for Adults throughout the year and classes for children during the school holidays.
